I hope that doesn’t happen to Chappell, to me she feels like a gen z Dolly Parton and I want continued good things for her. She seems like such a genuine person and so creative.

She makes me think of David Bowie—she embraces so many different styles, is sharp as a tack, and has charisma for days.

it’s always cyclical as well - as seen in taylor swift! she goes through periods of global adoration, which then just as quickly switches into getting woman’d

Yes! Public opinion on celebrity women can fluctuate so much, especially lately, Sabrina Carpenter is another example that comes to mind.

A thoughtful and generous piece as always!! It hadn’t crossed my mind yet that Chappell Roan might be at risk of this but it deffo has with Sabrina!! I am a staunch defender of Millie Bobby Brown because of the abuse she suffered at the hands of the internet all for being a literal child

i’ve always found whoever the internet likes and dislikes so arbitrary. someone could have literally committed a hate crime and still be beloved and someone could just have apparent “bad vibes” and be absolutely dogged on and mocked. it’s like that in real life as well tbh as you’ve noted😭 great read!

Adjacent to this topic is how please please please is about men as a liability for successful women because if it’s not her the public can punish they will find something her partner did and take that as the reason why fall from grace is justified

Enjoyed this piece as usual, though I'd argue that Rachel Zegler is a different type of "woman'd" because from what I've seen, most of her attackers are male anti-woke types who are upset at her for criticizing the traditionalist elements of Snow White. Not sure how many women are also attacking her, especially those that identify as progressive.

I know a lot of women personally that have “”attacked”” her casually in irl conversation, but the online wars may be being waged by men primarily. From what I see though, it seems to be a mix of both

Loved this piece! I love to see this topic get the exposure it needs. I saw Jameela Jamil speak on this a few years ago and found the concept fascinating. She showed snapshots of the tabloid exposure of the women impacted by it and you could see from the photos the tabloids chose to use and the click bait headlines they slapped on these ‘articles’ that the perception of the woman was quickly being changed, even though the ‘over exposure’ was their doing. We’re currently seeing this happen to Blake Lively. A few social mistakes, rumours about not getting along with make co workers (because of course a woman should get along with everyone she meets), suddenly she’s trying to be ‘too much like her husband’, and every bit of dirt from ‘anonymous sources’ and last interviews is dragged back up to be dissected.
